Tracy Aviary regains AZA accreditation

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Tracy Aviary has regained its Association of Zoos and Aquariums accreditation.

The aviary in Salt Lake City lost the accreditation in 2006 after inspectors criticized its aging infrastructure.

Park Director Tim Brown says the loss of the association’s endorsement made it harder to recruit staff members and hurt fundraising efforts.

But he says it also brought changes at the aviary that will create a better situation for its birds and visitors.

Last year Salt Lake County voters agreed to fund a $19.6 million bond for improvements at the aviary. The money will go for projects including a renovation to the Wilson Pavilion and a 10,000-square-foot walk-in exhibit featuring the birds of Central America.
