Jewelry maker spares nothing on building revamp

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah jeweler O.C. Tanner Co. spent $24.5 million gutting and restoring a neoclassical building in Salt Lake City for a flagship store that will open this week.

The company’s chairwoman, Carolyn Tanner Irish, calls the restoration a gift to downtown. Irish is a daughter of the company founder, Obert C. Tanner, and a bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Utah.

The 20,000-square-foot limestone building was constructed in 1905. Built as a library, it was later converted into a planetarium.

Inside is a three-story spiral staircase. A central chandelier contains more than 14,000 hand-folded flora shapes in white polymer and steel.
