For Now Utah
For over a decade, one of the best kept secrets in Italian fine dining in Utah has been Michelangelo Ristorante formerly in the heart of Sugar House. Those who insist on the most authentic dishes and flavors—not just your typical Italian American fare—eagerly made the trip downstairs in the back corner of an out-of-the-way shopping center to experience a meal saturated with the aromas and tastes of Italy. The patience of this almost cult-like following of food buffs has been rewarded, however, as Michelangelo has moved to its new location right out in the open on Highland Drive.
The friendly service and welcoming atmosphere feel like home, and as Chef/Owner Scott Ashley explains, Michelangelo is very much a family affair. He is joined in his efforts by several close relatives who hope to share their family’s love of food and an enjoyable meal with your family.
Michelangelo especially excels as a romantic spot for dates, anniversaries, and special occasions where quiet conversation comes easily as Sinatra and classic Italian tunes play softly in the background. It’s no coincidence this place is booked solid every Valentine’s Day. The serving staff is efficient and responsive without being overbearing, and their expert recommendations make pairing the right wine or selecting the perfect entrée simple. Two separate dining rooms in Michelangelo’s enhance the experience, with one wing designated for a more formal, intimate setting and the other made for lively family gatherings. Or, maybe an outdoor meal on the patio on a cool evening is more your style.
The real focus, though, is the food. It’s not often that the first taste of a meal is accompanied by delighted moans of appreciation, but virtually any item on the menu is sure to elicit some surprised expressions of approval. Michelangelo boasts close to a dozen daily specials in addition to the Tuscan fare it is known for. Chef Ashley isn’t afraid to tap into his “more adventurous side” when crafting these additions, and you’d be wise to trust his judgment…and his serving spoon. “I try to cater to everyone’s culinary philosophy when it comes to Italian food,” says Ashley, “but at the same time, I want to introduce something new to somebody with every visit, whatever their tastes or experience are.”
A new menu item that is perfect for a warm summer evening is a traditional Italian-style pizza from the new wood burning stove that is the centerpiece of the kitchen. A seasonal special that shouldn’t be missed is the black truffle pizza full of rich and rustic flavors. The addition of a new wine list and casual menu give diners even more appealing options to choose from.
Perpetual favorites at Michelangelo are the homemade gnocchi and seasonal varieties of risotto and ravioli which will make it especially difficult for menu browsers to decide whether or not to abandon these unparalleled options in favor of the list of specials. Here’s some advice: order from each menu and share—you won’t regret it. The patrons aren’t the only ones raving; Michelangelo’s commitment to culinary excellence has been rewarded with Zagat Survey’s “Extraordinary” rating three years running, as well as a spot on Salt Lake Magazine’s Gourmet 100.
Stop in soon to experience Michelangelo Ristorante in its new surroundings. With even more room for guests, you’ll spend even less time waiting and more time savoring your favorite dish. The scenery has changed, but the familiar reactions to that initial bite of an evening meal will let you know you’re in the right place.

I ate at the old location and had a really good experience. If you have a healthy appetite like me, I recommend ordering several courses. This will push up the price — but it’s a worthy treat.
